Krill Oil vs. Fish Oil: The Basics

February 28th, 2009 | admin | Krill Oil vs Fish Oil

As we keep saying, krill oil is superior to fish oil in every respect. 47 times more antioxidant power. Over 30 percent greater bioavailability. Won’t go rancid. No dangerous contaminants. Lower dosage yet higher effectiveness. Pharmaceutical and functional foods applications on the horizon. And the benefits to human health have only just begun to be discovered.

In fact, krill oil has been shown to be so effective for so many areas of human heakth that the leading manufacturer, Neptune Boitech, has a pharmaceutical subsidiary that is developing a prescription drug based on krill oil that shows great promise for patients with heart disease.

KrillKrill are tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that live at the bottom of the world’s coldest oceans and rise together at feeding time in such large and concentrated masses that large portions of the ocean surface turn pink. They feed on algae instead of other fish, and this is what makes their ingredients so anti-oxidant rich as well as so free of the dangerous contaminants found in most fish.

Neptune Biotech developed and patented the first extraction process that made it possible to bring krill oil to the marketplace in 2002. However, fish oil has been on the market for so long that it has taken the medical profession considerable time to catch up to an understanding of the differences.

Fish oil pillsDoctors started recommending fish oil supplements when studies showed that omega-3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial and that most humans are deficient in omega-3s. These are known as essential fatty acids because they are required   for the body to function normally. But the body doesn’t manufacture them as it does so many other substances. We can only get them from foods and supplements, and they are most abundant in marine oils.

One of the many differences between krill oil and fish oil is that the omega-threes in fish oil are unstable, and that means they can go rancid. Krill oil remains stable because it contains a super-antioxidant called astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin is also one of the most potent substances known to neutralize the dangerous free radicals that damage cells and cause premature aging and disease.

The omega-3 essential fatty acids are also quite different in krill oil. They are in phospholipid form, and amazingly, this structure is the same as the human cell. Thus the omega 3s in krill oil are able to penetrate all the cells in the body and brain, making krill oil nearly 100% bioavailable vs. about 65% for fish oil.

Krill oil has been proven superior to fish oil in clinical studies of patients with high cholesterol, post menstrual syndrome (PMS) and inflammation throughout the body. But it is also clear that krill oil is extraordinarily beneficial to healthy brain function and just about every other area of human health.

Ask your physician if krill oil is right for you and those you care about.

Why Krill Oil Beats Fish Oil for Heart Health

February 27th, 2009 | admin | Heart Health

Neptune Krill Oil (NKO) has made significant breakthroughs as a possible natural alternative to statin drugs for cholesterol management. The research described below was part of an ongoing program of clinical studies. While fish oil is promoted as beneficial to heart health, it does not elevate HDL (good) cholesterol.

Krill oil supports heart healthNeptune Biotech, the leading krill oil manufacturer, has published results of a clinical trial showing that reports a daily dose of NKO lowered bad LDL cholesterol levels by 34% and increased good HDL cholesterol by 44%. When used in addition with low-dose statin drugs, the effects were even more substantial.

Dr. Tina Sampalis,  vice president of R&D and business development at Neptune Technologies and Bioresources, says there is a clear relationship between abnormally high LDL and low HDL, and that more people have low HDL than high LDL.

The American Heart Association reported that over 34% of the U.S. population had some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in 2002. The direct costs were $258 billion, and the indirect costs were an additional $145 billion. And one cause of CVD is abnormal cholesterol.

The Neptune clinical trial was conducted at McGill University and the University of Montreal in the mid-2000s. It compared the effects of Neptune Krill Oil to fish oil, and the effects with or without cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, for three months on a six groups of patients who had abnormal cholesterol levels. The researchers found that 1 to 1.5 grams of Neptune Krill Oil per day reduced LDL by 34% and raised HDL by 43.5%.

Fish oil supplements reduced LDL levels by only 4.6% and increased HDL levels by only 4.2%.

Those who were given  the placebo had LDL increases of 13% and HDL losses of 4%.

Those who were given 10 mg doses of statin drugs only experienced reduced LDL of 29% and increased HDL of 13%.  Thus, krill oil was shown more effective than either fish oil or Lipitor, the most popular statin drug.

And NKO was combined with Lipitor, the result was a 37% decrease in LDL and a 51% increase in HDL.

Dr. Sampalis explained that a primary reason for the superiority of krill oil is that its omega-3 essential acids EPA and DHA are in phospholipid form, making them substrates for apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1), and that the body required A1 to produce HDL cholesterol.

Unlike fish oil, Neptune krill oil is rich in phospholipids, which are the foundations of human cells; and the super-antioxidant astaxanthin for nautralizing dangerous free radicals in the body.

What Others Are Saying

Krill Oil Promotes Heart Health It is believed that omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil can make an effective heart healthy cure. Krill oil can lower bad cholesterols such as triglycerides, LDLs and raise good cholesterol such as HDLs.

Why Krill Oil is a Super-Antioxidant

February 27th, 2009 | admin | Astaxanthin Antioxidant

Antarctic pure krill oil is rich in astaxanthin: the super-antioxidant that makes it 48 times more powerful than fish oil for fighting the free radicals that cause cellular damage, disease and aging. This antioxidant also contributes to krill oil’s superior bioavailability, and prevents it from going rancid like fish oil does.

Astaxanthin, like carotene, is a member of the carotenoid family but may be far nore powerful than its cousins in its ability to support the immune system and fight against the cellular damage caused by the free radicals.

KrillIn nature, the highest known levels of astaxanthin come from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. Even though algae is green, the axtasanthin is what gives salmon and krill their pink-orange color.

The importance of antioxidants can’t be over-emphasized. As mentioned, they neutralize free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative stress which weakens the cells, and that opens the door to degenerative disease.

Free radicals are all around us. Everyone is vulnerable. They come from environmental pollutants, excessive sunlight, food additives, smoking and more.

In addition to premature aging, the most devastating effects of free radical damage include but are not limited to cancer, brain damage, nervous system damage and macular degeneration.

So it’s obvious that carotenoids, and especially a super-antioxidant like astaxanthin, are of the utmost importance to human health.

Astaxanthin and vitamin E antioxidantsStudies have shown that astaxanthin has from 100 to 500 times more antioxidant power than the cartenoid vitamins A, C and E and beta-carotene.

Astaxanthin also fights free radical damage by boosting immune system function. It increases the presence of antibodies and helps to keep various immune systemORAC antioxidant ratings functions in balance. This means stronger resistance to infection and the ability to combat certain forms of cancer.

Clinical studies of Neptune Krill Oil have shown it to be superior to fish oil for reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol, and the high astaxanthin content of krill oil deserves much of the credit. Astaxanthin was shown to not only reduce existing levels of LDL, but also to decrease its production.

Krill oil is without a doubt becoming one of the most important everyday supplements for maintaining optimal health.

What Others Are Saying

DHA, Krill Oil & Green-Lipped Mussel – Which is Best?

Proponents of krill oil argue that it has an antioxidant within the oil. This is interesting, but most people taking fish oil take other supplements with many antioxidants. Another argument is that the krill oil contains some choline.

What is Krill Oil? Antioxidants, Vitamin A and Vitamin E are all contained in krill oil. These can help to restore comfort and release tension and negative sensation by stimulating internal energy flows that relieve the imbalance of tension.

Why Krill Oil Krill oil consists of a unique “triple power” combination of bioactive compounds—marine phospholipids, omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) bound to phospholipids and the potent antioxidant astaxanthin—all which have documented health benefits.

Krill Oil is the Richest Known Source of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids

February 27th, 2009 | admin | Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) are called “essential’ for good reason. Without them, life cannot exist. But as explained below, your body can’t make them. You get them from food, but that’s usually not enough. Medical authorities now agree that everyone should supplement daily. Krill oil capsules are the richest known EFA source.

Omega-3 supplementsYour health is in your hands. And you are what you eat. And chances are, unless you eat fish several times a week, you’re deficient in the omega-3 essential fatty acids that are so critical to good health.

You can get them from flax seeds, nuts, eggs and marine oils. And the most potent, most absorbable source of all is krill oil.

Omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid offering wide-ranging health benefits. The body doesn’t make it. The two key components, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), must be obtained from food and suplementation. Among the many benefits are heart health, cholesterol level management, blood pressure management, a strengthened immune system, the reduction of inflammation, support of healthy brain function, eye health, and more.

Then there’s Omega-6. While omega-3 is an anti-inflammatory, omega-6 causes inflammation if you get too much of it. Studies have shown that the American diet contains too much omega-6 and it is suspected to be a major cause of the arthritis epidemic. Omega-6 comes mostly in processed foods and in vegetable oils such as corn oil, sunflower oil and canola. It is also contained in fish oil and in too high a ratio with omega-3. Neptune Krill Oil, however, contains the best ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 found in any marine oil supplement.

Neptune Biotech was first to bring it to market, and its patented extraction process retains the maximum value of the krill’s nutrients. Neptune is private labeled under the brand names of several well-known companies, but each bottle will have the NKO trademark somewhere on the label. Look for it to ensure you’re getting the finest krill oil money can buy.

Omega-3, Krill Oil and Blood Pressure

February 26th, 2009 | admin | Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Krill oil contains a superior form of omega-3 essential fatty acids, making its omega-3 content more bioavailable and more effective for human health than that found in any marine or plant source. While most clinical studies with krill oil to date have focused on the areas of cholesterol management, brain disorders and inflammatory conditions including joint pain and premenstrual syndrome, here’s where science is headed on the blood pressure front.

Krill oil omega-3 and blood pressureA report in the April, 2007 issue of The Journal of Nutrition stated that low doses of omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been shown to reduce  diastolic blood pressure in middle-aged women and men.

Researchers at King’s College in London, England conducted a small randomized study where 18 women and 20 men aged 40 to 65 were given either 0.7 grams of DHA from algae or an olive oil placebo daily for 90 days.

The participants then went for four more months without supplementation. Then for another 90 days the researchers gave the algae supplement to the original olive oil placebo group, and the olive oil placebo to the original algae group. The researchers tested blood and urine samples after each study phase.

The DHA supplement increased the DHA content of red blood cells by 58% while also reducing an unhealthy ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. It also lowered diastolic blood pressure  by an average of 3.3. mm HG, and reduced heart rate by 2.1 beats per minute compared to the placebo.

The authors concluded that “A significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure was noted which is likely to be of clinical significance with regard to risk of future vascular events in middle-aged subjects. Future work is needed to confirm these findings and to investigate further the effects of DHA on cardiac function.”

Krill oil is Mother Nature’s most potent source of omega-3 EPA and DHA essential fatty acids. Some studies have shown it to be eight times more powerful than the omega-3 content of fish oil.

From the Blog-O-Sphere…

NKO’s Whoppingly Helpful Omega-3/6 Ratio

February 26th, 2009 | admin | Omega-3 Fatty Acids

As the richest form of omega-3 in nature, krill oil not only benefits human health most effectively; it also addresses the issue of too much omega-6 in both the typical American diet, and in fish oil. Omega-6 is considered a key culprit in our ever-rising inflammatory disease rate. While omega-6 dietary sources are explained below, also note that fish oil has an omega 3/6 ratio of 3:1 or lower, and Neptune pure Antarctic krill oil (NKO) has a whopping 15 parts omega-3 to 1 part omega-6.

Essential fatty acids are critical to good health, but they can’t be made by the body. You get them from food and supplementation.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, while omega-6 causes inflammation. Inflammation causes all kinds of diseases from artiritis and cardiovascular disease to cancer.

Most Americans are deficient in omega-3 and are consuming too much omega-6. The omega-6 is coming from red meats, processed foods and vegetable oils such as corn, soy, sunflower and safflower oils.  And if they’re taking fish oil, they’re adding fuel to the flames because of its high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3.

To cut way down on omega-6, use olive oil. coconut oil or organic butter, stop eating processed foods, eat red meat only rarely, and eat more fish. However, as you probably know, most fish are contaminated with dangerous toxins. So stick to the safe ones: tilapia, wild Pacific salmon, flounder, haddock and sardines.

And take krill oil instead of fish oil. Other articles on this website describe the important reasons why.

What Others Are Saying

Can Omega-3 supplements help your health? Americans (and many Western societies) eat a lot of meat, grains and processed foods that are very high in Omega-6. Low doses of Omega-6 are essential for good health, but too much of a good thing can be deadly.

AHA Champions Omega-6 PUFAs to Counter Popular Nutrition Advice A new AHA new scientific advisory is recommending omega-6 PUFAs make up 5% to 10% of daily calorie intake and discounts the health benefits of reduced omega-6:3 ratios promulgated by diet and nutrition books.

Omega-6 Fat Research News & Commentary Controversy and debate are an expected (and welcome) part of the scientific process. But the American Heart Association’s recent advisory urging Americans to gobble up their omega-6 fat is an unconscionable disservice.

Krill Oil, Omega-3 and Bone Health

February 25th, 2009 | admin | Bone Health

The omega-3 fatty acids (EFAs) in krill oil are in phospholipid form, not the triglyceride form of those in fish oil. This is one of several reasons why krill oil is more effective than fish oil for human health. Phospholipids are the constituents of your cell membranes. This means that more omega-3s per krill oil dose can penetrate your cells. The bioavailability comparison is 98 per cent for krill oil vs. 65 per cent for fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids support many areas of human health including bone health.

While omega-3 fatty acids are known to support heart, vision, gastrointestinal, respiratory and mental health, study results appearing in the March 2007 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveal that they also support bone health in young men.

Krill oil promotes bone healthThe researchers took blood samples  from 78 healthy males whose average age was  17 years for the Northern Osteoporosis and Obesity Study. They also measured the bone mineral density of the total body, hip, and spine, as well as bone mineral density changes between the ages of 16 and 22 and between 22 and 24.

They found that males with high blood levels of omega-3 had a 27 per cent increase in total body bone mineral density by the time they reached 22 years of age, and a 26 per cent increase in spine bone mineral density between ages 16 and 22.

While the researchers for some reason didn’t measure omega-3 intake, they cited research showing that fish oil supplementation increases bone health in the elderly. Thus they could not recommend dosage, but concluded that “omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, are positively associated with bone mineral accrual (growth) and, thus, with peak bone mineral density in young men.” They also referred to other studies showing beneficial effects of omega-3 on bone mineral density in other populations.

The most potent and effective form of omega-3 essential fatty acids in all of nature is in krill oil.

Autism Research, Phospholipids and Krill Oil

February 1st, 2009 | admin | Phospholipids

Human brainAutism research shows that autistic children have phospholipid/omega-3 deficiencies. Phospholipids, specifically the phosphatidylcholine type, are essential for brain health; they are the constituents of human cell membranes; and they distinguish krill oil among the most important alternative herbal therapies for autism. Krill is the only animal source of omega-3 in phospholipid form, and the only source whose fatty acid profile is optimized for the brain. Thus its oil is readily absorbed by the cells, delivering essential fatty acids to body and brain as nothing, nothing else can.

PhospholipidsOmega-3 essential fatty acids are are called “essential” because life can’t survive without them. But the body can’t manufacture them and they can only be obtained from food and supplements. Omega-3s in the form of phospholipids are able to cross the blood-brain barrier and provide superior nourishment to not only brain cells but every cell in the body. They do not exist in this form in fish oil.

Phospholipid deficiency is being linked to not only autism but also ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and Rett’s Syndrome.

While it appears that phospholipid deficiencies might be at the root of many behavioral disorders, it seems that science has a long way to go in determining how to treat it. But it is logical that if krill oil is the only source of omega-3s in phospholipid form and thus a most effective and safe natural supplement, doctors should be recommending it. So far, clinical studies with Neptune Krill Oil (NKO) are showing significant results for a variety of patients with various brain disorders.
