Neptune Krill Oil (NKO), the leading krill oil brand, was shown to be a “safe and effective product for the treatment of ADHD,” said Dr. Leslie Rouder of Florida’s Barry University after a Phase-1 clinical study in January 2007.

The 6-month study was initiated by the International Organization of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and the patients showed significant improvement in all of Barkley’s Executive Function scores.

Brain health and Neptune Krill OilADHD is a behavioral disorder affecting tens of thousands of children and smaller numbers of adults. It is known that patients with a variety of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are deficient in omega-3, an essential fatty acid found most abundantly in marine oils.  Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for healthy brain function.

Because the body can’t synthesize essential fatty acids, we must get them from food and dietary supplements. Food sources include flax seed, nuts, eggs and seafood, but they are more potent and more bioavailable in krill oil than in any other source.

Th three major types of omega three fatty acids are Alpha linolenic acid (ALA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The body converts the ALA to EPA and DHA. These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain.  EPA increases blood flow and supports the hormonal and immune systems which in turn affect brain functions.  DHA nourishes the  membrane of brain cells that transmit signals within and from the brain. A major difference between the omega-3 essential oils in the krill vs. the fish or any other source is that its omega-3s are in a different form, they are nearly 100% bioavailable, and they cross the blood-brain barrier.

Omega-3s also have anti-inflammatory effects and have been clinically proven in other Neptune Krill Oil studies to be beneficial in the treatment of arthritis.

A study  in Australia  found that children with ADHD showed improvement in their symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior as a result of omega-3 supplementation.

A study at  Hallowell Center in Sudbury, Mass. and published in the Nutrition Journal found that high dosages of EPA and DHA resulted in improvement of the inattention, hyperactivity, defiant behavior, and conduct disorder in children with ADHD.
