Krill Oil, Omega-3 and Bone Health

February 25th, 2009 | admin | Bone Health

The omega-3 fatty acids (EFAs) in krill oil are in phospholipid form, not the triglyceride form of those in fish oil. This is one of several reasons why krill oil is more effective than fish oil for human health. Phospholipids are the constituents of your cell membranes. This means that more omega-3s per krill oil dose can penetrate your cells. The bioavailability comparison is 98 per cent for krill oil vs. 65 per cent for fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids support many areas of human health including bone health. Here’s a brief summary of one study with young men.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Increase Bone Mineral Density 27 Per Cent

Omega-3 fatty acids have demonstrated beneficial effects for heart, vision, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and mental health.

Krill oil promotes bone healthA study published in the March 2007 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that they also benefit bone health in young men.

Researchers had blood samples taken from 78 healthy young men with an average age of 17 years who participated in the Northern Osteoporosis and Obesity Study. Researchers also measured the bone mineral density of the participants’ total body, hip, and spine. They then measured bone mineral density changes between 16 and 22 years of age and 22 and 24 years of age.

The researchers found that men with higher blood levels of omega-3 had a 27% increase in total body bone mineral density by the time they reached 22 years of age. There was also a 26% increase in spine bone mineral density between 16 and 22 years of age.

In addition to fatty fish and omega-3 supplements, Neptune krill oil is another important source EFAs. This study did not measure omega-3 intake; only blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids were measured. The researchers could therefore not make specific recommendations for EFA dosage for young men.

Nevertheless, they cited research showing that fish oil supplementation increases bone health in the elderly and concluded that "omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, are positively associated with bone mineral accrual (growth) and, thus, with peak bone mineral density in young men." Citing other studies indicating beneficial effects of omega-3 on bone mineral density in other populations, researchers identified no reason that they would not help bone accrual in other segments of the population.

Scoop on Krill Oil The health benefits of omega-3 have long been recognised and understood, but now there’sa superior product that packs a big punch. It comes in the form of a tiny shrimp-like creature called Krill.

DHA and Krill DHA is the most biologically useful omega 3 fatty acid. Over the past year sellers of dietary supplements have promoted various forms of DHA-containing oils such as krill oil or green-lipped mussel as superior to DHA-containing fish oil

Omega 3 is One of the Healthy Fats Krill oil and salmon oil have been said to be excellent way to increase your omega 3 levels. I learned this information from a great natural doctor.
