Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) are called “essential’ for good reason. Without them, life cannot exist. But as explained below, your body can’t make them. You get them from food, but that’s usually not enough. Medical authorities now agree that everyone should supplement daily. Krill oil capsules are the richest known EFA source.

Omega-3, Krill Oil and Blood Pressure
Krill oil contains a superior form of omega-3 essential fatty acids, making its omega-3 content more bioavailable and more effective for human health than that found in any marine or plant source. While most clinical studies with krill oil to date have focused on the areas of cholesterol management, brain disorders and inflammatory conditions including joint pain and premenstrual syndrome, here’s where science is headed on the blood pressure front.
A report in the April, 2007 issue of The Journal of Nutrition stated that low doses of omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been shown to reduce diastolic blood pressure in middle-aged women and men.
Researchers at King’s College in London, England conducted a small randomized study where 18 women and 20 men aged 40 to 65 were given either 0.7 grams of DHA from algae or an olive oil placebo daily for 90 days.
The participants then went for four more months without supplementation. Then for another 90 days the researchers gave the algae supplement to the original olive oil placebo group, and the olive oil placebo to the original algae group. The researchers tested blood and urine samples after each study phase.
The DHA supplement increased the DHA content of red blood cells by 58% while also reducing an unhealthy ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. It also lowered diastolic blood pressure by an average of 3.3. mm HG, and reduced heart rate by 2.1 beats per minute compared to the placebo.
The authors concluded that “A significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure was noted which is likely to be of clinical significance with regard to risk of future vascular events in middle-aged subjects. Future work is needed to confirm these findings and to investigate further the effects of DHA on cardiac function.”
Krill oil is Mother Nature’s most potent source of omega-3 EPA and DHA essential fatty acids. Some studies have shown it to be eight times more powerful than the omega-3 content of fish oil.

NKO’s Whoppingly Helpful Omega-3/6 Ratio
As the richest form of omega-3 in nature, krill oil not only benefits human health most effectively; it also addresses the issue of too much omega-6 in both the typical American diet, and in fish oil. Omega-6 is considered a key culprit in our ever-rising inflammatory disease rate. While omega-6 dietary sources are explained below, also note that fish oil has an omega 3/6 ratio of 3:1 or lower, and Neptune pure Antarctic krill oil (NKO) has a whopping 15 parts omega-3 to 1 part omega-6.
