NKO’s Whoppingly Helpful Omega-3/6 Ratio

February 26th, 2009 | admin | Omega-3 Fatty Acids

As the richest form of omega-3 in nature, krill oil not only benefits human health most effectively; it also addresses the issue of too much omega-6 in both the typical American diet, and in fish oil. Omega-6 is considered a key culprit in our ever-rising inflammatory disease rate. While omega-6 dietary sources are explained below, also note that fish oil has an omega 3/6 ratio of 3:1 or lower, and Neptune pure Antarctic krill oil (NKO) has a whopping 15 parts omega-3 to 1 part omega-6.

Essential fatty acids are critical to good health, but they can’t be made by the body. You get them from food and supplementation.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, while omega-6 causes inflammation. Inflammation causes all kinds of diseases from artiritis and cardiovascular disease to cancer.

Most Americans are deficient in omega-3 and are consuming too much omega-6. The omega-6 is coming from red meats, processed foods and vegetable oils such as corn, soy, sunflower and safflower oils.  And if they’re taking fish oil, they’re adding fuel to the flames because of its high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3.

To cut way down on omega-6, use olive oil. coconut oil or organic butter, stop eating processed foods, eat red meat only rarely, and eat more fish. However, as you probably know, most fish are contaminated with dangerous toxins. So stick to the safe ones: tilapia, wild Pacific salmon, flounder, haddock and sardines.

And take krill oil instead of fish oil. Other articles on this website describe the important reasons why.

What Others Are Saying

Can Omega-3 supplements help your health? Americans (and many Western societies) eat a lot of meat, grains and processed foods that are very high in Omega-6. Low doses of Omega-6 are essential for good health, but too much of a good thing can be deadly.

AHA Champions Omega-6 PUFAs to Counter Popular Nutrition Advice A new AHA new scientific advisory is recommending omega-6 PUFAs make up 5% to 10% of daily calorie intake and discounts the health benefits of reduced omega-6:3 ratios promulgated by diet and nutrition books.

Omega-6 Fat Research News & Commentary Controversy and debate are an expected (and welcome) part of the scientific process. But the American Heart Association’s recent advisory urging Americans to gobble up their omega-6 fat is an unconscionable disservice.
